Side Effects of the Depo Provera Injection

The Depo-Provera injection can be an effective way to prevent pregnancy, but some women may experience side effects. Luckily, most of these side effects may be temporary and only last until the body gets used to the new hormone levels created by the medication. However, women considering the use of the Depo-Provera injection as a method of birth control should talk to a doctor about these side effects to determine if this medication is right for them.

Menstrual Changes

Changes to the menstrual cycle are the most common side effects of the Depo-Provera injection, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Irregular and unpredictable bleeding or spotting may often occur when a woman first receives the injection, but over time this may decrease to the point of the woman not receiving a period at all. In fact, Drugs.com states that approximately 55 percent of women will no longer have any menstruation after a year of using Depo-Provera as birth control, and 68 percent will no longer menstruate after 2 years. However, this is reversible and after the woman discontinues the use of Depo-Provera, normal menstrual cycles typically resume.

Other Side Effects

Although side effects other than menstrual changes are not common, some women do experience them. These side effects may include headaches, dizziness, weight gain, nervousness, depression, changes in appetite, hair loss or hair growth and acne, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Drugs.com lists additional possible side effects to include abdominal pain or discomfort, weakness and fatigue.

Side Effects From Long-Term Use

Women who use the Depo-Provera injection for birth control for long periods of time may experience bone loss which may lead to osteroporisis. Although this bone loss will stop when the woman discontinues the medication, using Depo-Povera for a period of more than 2 years is not recommended, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.
