Gout occurs when high levels of uric acid are developed in the body. One of the things that can cause an increase in uric acid is obesity. While losing weight may be predicated on appearance, it can also help keep you healthy and happy as well.
2. Watch the Beer
Drinking beer is usually associated with a larger belly, because not many people are thinking about gout when they are sitting down for a few cold ones. According to WebMD.com, drinking just a few beers a week highly increases the chances of getting gout. This is because beer is high in purines, which eventually break down in to uric acid.
3. Go Easy on Meat and Seafood
Getting a nice fillet mignon or lobster drenched in butter is a delicacy to be savored. Unfortunately, these foods can do more harm than good. Like beer, meat and seafood are high in purines, the contributing factor in gout that breaks down into uric acid. Consume meat and seafood in moderation as high levels of consumption could prove to be costly.
4. Don't Go Too Low in Calories
Losing weight and consuming less meat and seafood can greatly help your chances that you will not get gout. However, going on a diet too low in calories could cause problems in the long run. Low-calorie diets can actually cause an increase in uric acid. Eating sensibly and in moderation is a better prevention method.
5. Avoid Diuretics
If you already have gout or think you may be at risk for it, then avoid taking any form of diuretic. Many people trying to lose weight will turn to diuretics. Medications that act as a diuretic have been shown to cause uric acid levels to increase. The increased levels could contribute to the cause of gout or cause a flare up if you already have it. If you think you may be at risk then speak to your doctor before using diuretics.
