How to Make Your Own Massage Oil

Essential oils are believed to be the life force of the plant from which they're derived. They're the distilled healing qualities of the plants, and they have many applications in natural medicine, beauty and home and garden care. Massage oils made from essential oils combine the plant's benefits with the benefits of relaxation and human touch. These massage oils are customizable based on scent or healing properties and are easy to make at home.

Step 1

Choose a carrier oil. Carrier oils dilute concentrated essential oils to the right therapeutic doses. Common examples are grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil and jojoba oil. Jojoba oil most closely matches our own body oils and is easiest absorbed by the skin. Avoid olive oil for this recipe, as it has a strong odor.

Step 2

Choose an essential oil or combination of oils based on fragrance or healing properties. There are hundreds of types of oil. Use lavender or geranium oil if you are experiencing oily skin. Neroli oil treats dry skin. Grapefruit oil is a stimulant and antidepressant. Choose any combination of oil you like.

Step 3

Use a funnel to pour one ounce of carrier oil into your squeeze bottle. Use oil at room temperature, as warm oil can degrade or dissipate the essential oils.

Step 4

Add 8 to 10 drops of essential oils to the bottle. Tightly cap the lid and gently invert the bottle to mix it. Do not shake, simple rock the bottle back and forth.

Step 5

Use your massage oil over any surface of the body to promote skin healing and relaxation.

Step 6

Label the bottle and store in a cool, dark place. Remember heat damages the essential oils.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 oz. carrier oil
  • 8 to 10 drops essential oils
