Avodart (generic name, dutasteride) is a medication used to treat an enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. According to Drugs.com, Avodart reduces the compression on your urethra (structure where your urine exits) and allows easier urine flow.

Features

According to MedlinePlus, Avodart belongs to the class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and prevents your prostate from enlarging.

Side Effects

Drugs.com says that Avodart's side effects include decreased libido (sex drive), erectile dysfunction (impotence), breast tenderness and decreased ejaculation.

Use

Avodart is available as a capsule that is taken daily by mouth. If you miss a dose, take the capsule as soon as possible. However, skip the missed dose if it is close to your next dosage, advises MedlinePlus.

Diet

You should avoid drinking grape juice when taking Adovart. It may potentiate the aforementioned side effects.

Warning

According to MedlinePlus, you should tell your your doctor whether you are taking such medications as cimetidine, ketoconazole or clarithromycin. This may make Avodart less effective.
