How to Get Rid of Dark Circles & Bags Under The Eyes

Dark circles and under-eye bags can make you look tired and worn out, eliciting concern from friends and loved ones. Although dark circles can be exasperated by a lack of sleep, there are other reasons why your skin may become pale and reveal the blood vessels underneath that give eyes a dark appearance. Late nights, sinus infections and pregnancy can all contribute to pale skin. Water retention may be causing bags. There are things to avoid and remedies to try if you want to reduce the appearance of bags and dark circles.

Step 1

Use your index finger to lightly tap the skin under your eyes. Start at the outside corner and tap gently across to the inside corner. Go back and forth. Tapping will improve the circulation of blood to the eyes. Better circulation helps reduce bags too, says Jody A. Levine, M.D., in an article entitled "The No-Knife Eye Lift." Dr. Levine is a dermatologist in New York City.

Step 2

Place a chilled eye compress or cold cucumber slices on your eyes. Leave them on for five minutes to reduce swelling, as recommended by Dr. Levine. You can also placed cotton balls dipped in juice from freshly grated cucumbers on your eyes, as recommended by Dr. Savitha Suri in an article called "Natural Remedies And Home Remedies For Dark Circles Under Eyes." Dr. Suri says that this is the best remedy for dark circles. Dr. Suri is a practitioner of Ayurveda.

Step 3

Apply an eye cream nightly. Use gentle pressure to dot the eye cream onto the fragile skin tissue around the eyes. Select a cream with caffeine in it, as advised by Dr. Levine. Caffeine can help skin become firmer. Try a product like Bioré Daily Recharging Enliven Cooling Eye Gel or Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller.

Step 4

Go to bed at the same time every night and set your alarm for at least 8 hours after your bedtime, as recommended by Dr. Savitha Suri in an article called "Natural Remedies And Home Remedies For Dark Circles Under Eyes."

Step 5

Skip salty foods, cocktails, sweets, and chocolate. Instead, eat more vegetables, fruits and foods such as whole grains and fortified cereals that are high in fiber, as recommended by Dr. Suri.

Tips and Warnings

  • Under-eye concealer can reduce the appearance of dark circles.
  • Ask your doctor with the medication you are taking causes dilation of blood vessels, which allows blood to move more easily through the vessels and show up as dark circles.
