How to Reduce Dark Circles Under Eyes

Properly applied makeup is a great way to reduce the appearance or dark circles under your eyes , according to Ayuvedic practitioner Dr. Savitha Suri and "Real Simple" magazine online. Dark circles may be hereditary, so allow late nights and scratching your eyes can contribute to the appearance of dark circles, makeup maybe your only hope for reducing circles significantly.

Step 1

Apply eye cream. Eye cream prepares the skin for concealer. It also plumps skin, making blood vessels harder to see according to dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, M.D., in an article called "The No-Knife Eye Lift." Put a small amount of eye cream on your ring finger dab it on the skin under your eye. Begin at the inside corner of your eye and work across. Do both eyes. Be gentle and use mild pressure.

Step 2

Dip makeup brush into concealer. Use a concealer with a yellow undertone, as recommended by "Real Simple" magazine article "How To: Conceal Under Eye Circles." Dot concealer on your skin, following the same pattern you used for applying the eye cream to both eyes; start at the inside and work your way out. "Real Simple" suggests trying Chanel Pro Lumière Correcteur, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage and Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Éclat.

Step 3

Wait a few moments for the heat from your skin to warm the concealer. This will make the concealer easier to blend.

Step 4

Use your ring finger to softly tap and blend the concealer into your skin. Be careful to not pull the sensitive skin under your eyes while you tap.

Step 5

Apply a small amount of translucent powder. The powder will help the concealer stay in place throughout your day.

Tips and Warnings

She also recommends drinking at least 15 glasses of water a day. You may have heard about the cucumber slices on the eyes trick. It really works. A cold compress or an eye mask like the Crabtree & Evelyn Gel Eye Mask can also cool the skin around the eyes. This will reduce swelling and cause blood vessels to constrict, says Jody A.
