Collagen is a natural protein ingredient by the body that is found in bones, skin and connective tissues. Synthetic collagen made from cow or pig collagen is used as a supplement to treat wrinkles by injecting the substance directly into the depressed areas on the face in an attempt to plump up the skin and create a smoother appearance, report doctors at the Mayo Clinic. Collagen injections also can be used to treat other conditions, such as urinary incontinence and rheumatoid arthritis.

Bruising

Patients should expect to have bruising at the site of the injection. Bruising can last up to seven days. The area of the injection also will remain swollen for about seven days. Mistakes and unforeseen reactions also can cause additional bruising that appears once the bruising from the procedure resides. Skin pigmentation can remain dark and discolored. The contours and firmness in the skin affected by the collagen also can be distorted.

Allergic Reactions

Patients risk an allergic reaction to collagen supplements. An allergic reaction can appear directly at the site of the injection in the form of a rash or extensive swelling not related to the actual procedure. Doctors at A Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon report that allergic reactions to collagen can appear as red bumps that turn to ulcers and leave permanent scarring. Allergic reactions also can appear systemically and cause side effects such as hives all over the body or flu-like systems that include nausea, headaches and vomiting.

Infection

As with any medical procedure that involves a needle, there is a risk of infection, especially from providers who do not maintain a sterile environment. Some patients prefer to forgo the risks of a medical procedure and receive collagen in a liquid form. Researchers at the NASA Astrophysics Data System at Harvard University report that, in studies, there were no adverse side effects reported in patients treated with collagen liquid supplements.

Temporary Results

Patients who receive collagen supplements to treat wrinkles or other medical conditions report that one undesirable side effect is the temporary nature of collagen treatments. The positive plumping effects of the supplement only last about six months. The procedure must be repeated to maintain the same results because collagen is eventually absorbed back into the body's system.
