1. Not Everyone Undergoing Chemotherapy Gets Ill
Would it surprise to know that some people sail through chemotherapy with only little or no symptoms? It can happen. Nourish yourself for as much time as possible for you start therapy. People who have the best nutritional status may fair the best. Also reduce your stress level as much as possible. Poor sleep and stress hormones can contribute to inflammation and worsen the side effects of chemotherapy. Bathe by candlelight, practice your favorite meditation and relaxation techniques, and think positively.
2. Nausea and Stomach Upset are Amongst the Most Common Chemo Side Affects
For many, the worst of chemotherapy side affects are nausea, stomach upset and an inability to eat or drink much. Have some ice chips handy to keep your fluid intake up in case your tummy is touchy. Keep straws around in case you are fatigued and queasy; they can help you drink more easily from your bedside glass.
3. Many Simple Herbs and Home Remedies Can Help
Simple mint and chamomile teas are excellent at alleviating nausea. You can use commercial tea bags or, better yet, have a supply of fresh dry herbs and steep a whole aromatic pot full. Adding a little honey or maple syrup can keep your blood sugar up if you're having trouble eating. Fresh ginger roots, sliced or grated and simmered briefly in hot water also makes a great anti-nausea for chemotherapy mixed with the juice of fresh orange and a bit of honey.
4. Prepare Ahead of Time Whenever Possible
Before you start chemotherapy prepare ahead of time. Get as much time off work as possible. Spend a day in the kitchen making pots of soup to freeze in small containers. Stock the kitchen with veggies to steam or juice and mineral water to settle an upset stomach. And prepare your bedroom like a palace. Get some funny videos and put tissues, a heating pad, some new comfy socks, an aromatherapy candle, a vase of flowers and anything that nurtures your soul next to your bed.
5. Get Support From Friends and Family
You know how people say, "If there is anything I can do, just let me know"? Well, take them up on it immediately. Have someone take your videos back for you and bring you some new ones. Have someone come over and take your soup out of the freezer, heat it, serve it and do the dishes. Ask someone with a juicer to make you carrot juice, beet juice, green juices or anything that sounds good to you. Go ahead. They'll truly love to help you!
