How to Find Parenting Classes

Parenting classes cover a wide variety of topics. Some brand new parents need classes on childcare basics, breastfeeding or childbirth. Seasoned parents may seek to improve their skills, more effectively communicate with their children or better manage discipline. If you've never taken a parenting class before, you may wonder how to go about finding a class suited to your needs. It's important to locate as many resources as you can and evaluate which program you think will best meet your needs.

Step 1

Get a referral from your prenatal care provider. It's likely that your midwife, doula or OB/GYN will be able to provide you with some resources regarding parenting classes. In some cases, especially with midwives and doulas, they may teach classes or offer to give you private classes as part of your pre and post natal care package.

Step 2

Contact local hospitals. Hospitals usually offer a wide range of classes from parenting basics to breastfeeding to labor and delivery techniques. Even if you decide not to have your baby in a hospital, you might benefit from their scheduled classes.

Step 3

Look to the internet for parenting classes. Online parenting classes usually charge a fee and cover similar material you would encounter at an in-person class. They offer certificates and instructor contact information in case you need proof of the class to receive benefits or other services.

Step 4

Contact your state's Department of Job and Family Services or Children's Services department. Because these organizations are constantly in contact with parents who have to take parenting classes by court order, they should be able to recommend several classes to you.

Step 5

Contact local universities to see if they offer parenting classes taught by students at a reduced cost. These classes are often similar quality to professionally taught classes but have the added benefit of giving a student teaching experience.

Step 6

Tap your personal network. Ask your pediatrician, your friends, your church members, and your co-workers if they have a class to recommend.
