Skin that looks sun-kissed or tanned is highly sought-after. Obtaining a tan in the sun requires dedication and has many risks. Getting a healthy tan can be accomplished without harmful UVA and UVB rays. Modern sunless tanning products have made this process easier than before. With patience, time and the right preparation, a beautiful glow is possible without added skin damage like premature aging or unsightly sun spots.

Step 1

Prepare your skin for tanning by cleansing and exfoliating it in the shower. Spend a few extra seconds rubbing areas like the ankles, knees, elbows and feet. Dry off with a clean towel after the shower.

Step 2

Put a generous amount of self tanning lotion in your hands. Rub the lotion in smooth strokes, working your way up the body. Use slightly more lotion than you normally would for daily hydration. Do not over-rub.

Step 3

Wash your hands with soap and water to remove the lotion and prevent orange build up.

Step 4

Wait 15 minutes or as long as the product label states before putting on your clothes. Your skin should be mostly dry to the touch. It may feel tacky in some areas. Rub these areas in a little more if it has been several minutes since the application.

Step 5

Repeat the application process as often as the label recommends. This is often daily or several times a week.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use a cotton ball to apply the tanning lotion to the tops of your hands after washing them.
