The Best Exercise for Kids is Play

Lately, it seems that all of the parents I know, both patients and friends, think their children need exercise. And unfortunately, they all believe this exercise has to be in the form of lessons, team sports and forced practices. These kids are driven from school to swimming lessons to soccer practice to dance lessons and then back home to do homework, eat dinner and go to bed. This is all to support the idea that "my child needs exercise."

Children do need exercise, especially when so many of them sit in front of the TV or computer every day. But exercise should be fun. Every child would enjoy and benefit from playing tag in the backyard, going for a walk or a bike ride, or playing at the park with her family. I think many parents forget this is also a great way to connect with their children. There is no pressure, no expectations, no outside influences like coaches or the score---it's just you and your child.

Think back to when you were young. Most likely, your days were not filled with lessons and strict practices. You had time to play with children in your neighborhood, and you exercised without even realizing it. It was play---plain and simple. You strengthened your bones, you developed your muscles, you gave your heart a workout and you learned how to do new things. You were part of a team of friends, or you may have set new challenges for yourself, such as running across the yard as fast as you could. But as far as you knew, it was just wonderful fun.

As a pediatrician, I want all of my patients to be physically active. Team sports can be great and I encourage children to have activities besides school. But I also remind them and their parents that playing and having fun is one of the best ways to exercise.
