How Is a Body Wrap Done?

Body wrapping is a technique used for both cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. It tones and tightens skin, detoxifies the body, relieves aches and pains, improves circulation and helps heal skin. Body wraps are done by an aesthetician in a spa or alternative health care setting, and involves wrapping strips of fabric or cloth bandages (dipped in a clay solution first) around the body.

Preparing Mixture

A mixture of clay, essential oils and herbs is prepared. Bentonite clay, French green clay, red clay and sea clay are types of clays used in body wrap mixtures. Essential oils such as lavender, lemon, basil or rosemary can be used in the mixture. Herbs like chamomile, lavender, rose petal powder and fennel are a few herbal ingredients used in the clay mixture.

Distilled Water

Approximately 64 oz. of distilled water is heated on a medium heat. A cup of mineral, Epsom or sea salt is dissolved in the heated distilled water. The water and salt mixture is removed from the heat to cool. Once the water has cooled to a warm temperature, the clay mixture is added to create a thin paste. The clay and water mixture should be warm but not too hot, as it could burn the individual being wrapped.

Body Wrap

Elastic bandages such as Ace bandages or cotton material strips are then put into the clay and distilled water solution. A person stands in a warm room while the aesthetician applies each strip that was soaked in the clay solution to her body, starting with the ankles up to the neck. The body wrap strips are wrapped in a snug fashion, but not too tightly as to constrict circulation. Safety pins are used to secure the strips or bandages.

Rest

After all the body wrap strips are applied, the individual is wrapped in saran wrap or steps into a PVC or plastic exercise suit. The wrap is left on for about 30 minutes before being removed. The individual then bathes after the wraps are removed.
