The Advantages of Mineral Makeup

Mineral makeup surged in popularity around 2007, and has been steadily rising in the world of beauty and skin care ever since. First marketed on late-night infomercials, soon thereafter a number of cosmetic companies began offering mineral lines. It's no wonder that many beauty enthusiasts prefer mineral makeup over the standard liquid or powder makeup; it has obvious advantages over its more synthetic counterparts. If you're not sure about making the switch, consider all of the advantages of mineral makeup.

Natural Ingredients

While most regular makeups are laden with fillers, waxes and chemicals, mineral makeup is made with all natural ingredients, usually titanium dioxide, zinc and other minerals. These natural minerals are more soothing to the skin, and a good alternative to women with sensitive skin that flares or reddens with synthetic makeups. Some women even claim that mineral makeup improves the skin, although no studies have been completed to verify this claim.

One Layer

When you use regular makeup, often you need to use a concealer, foundation and a powder to achieve the smooth look that you want. With mineral makeup, the micronized minerals are so fine that most women just need the one layer of minerals to achieve a smooth look, the one pot of mineral makeup acts as a concealer, foundation and finishing powder all in one step. This cuts back on the amount of makeup that you need to wear.

Natural Coverage

The mineral makeup enhances your skin's tone and texture without masking it completely, resulting in a more natural amount of coverage and a mimicking of the skin's natural state. Some prefer this natural coverage to a liquid foundation, which often covers pores and texture in an unnatural way.

Coverage Adjustment

With traditional types of makeup, there is generally one type of coverage. Because a liquid or powder synthetic makeup goes on heavy in the first place, adding more layers will only add to the heavy look of the makeup. There is no way to achieve a lighter coverage. Mineral makeup starts with a light coverage, so you can dial up the coverage to achieve a higher amount simply by adding another layer. Those who prefer a more natural coverage need only to apply a small amount. Those who wish to cover flaws with a moderate amount of coverage can simply add another layer.

Sunscreen

The American Society of Dermatological Surgery notes that two of the best natural ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium oxide, the two ingredients most commonly found in mineral makeup. It found that the zinc oxide was superior at defending your skin from the sun. This means that your makeup already has a built in sunscreen, protecting your face from harmful and aging UVA and UVB rays throughout the day. That natural sunscreen can help ward off skin cancer and keep your skin smoother.
