Foods That Have Pheromones

Pheromones are chemicals released by animals that send signals in the form of smell to other animals. There are pheromones for fear, alertness and sexual fertility. There is skepticism as to whether or not humans can produce pheromones. Dr. Peter Brennan of Bristol University told the BBC, "There's more and more evidence accumulating at a low level that humans are producing chemicals which can have an effect on other humans..." Since we can't rely on our own natural pheromones just yet, try serving the following foods at your next romantic dinner.

Oysters

Oysters are one of the best known aphrodisiacs. According to Discovery Health, oysters are high in zinc which naturally increases testosterone levels. Since testosterone contributes to a healthy reproductive system, couples trying to conceive a child are advised to consume oysters or other sources of zinc. According to Dr. Brennar, these factors cause the production of pheromones which in turn increases libido.

Almonds

Almonds are high in vitamin E which triggers sex hormones. Other foods high in vitamin E include asparagus, sunflower seeds and olives or olive oil. Add almonds to a salad for a pre-dinner aphrodisiac. For a double dose of pheromones, top asparagus with sliced almonds and serve.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains serotonin--a chemical that makes us feel good. Since mood has a major effect on sexual desire, chocolate can increase libido. Feeling guilty won't help sexual desire, so the health-conscious can enjoy a piece of antioxidant-rich dark chocolate.

Pumpkin Pie

According to the Smell and Taste Research Organization, the combined smell of pumpkin pie and lavender puts men in the mood. A study initiated by Dr. Hirsch and Dr. Gruss monitored the penile blood flow of men as they smelled 30 different scents. The combined smell of pumpkin pie and lavender increased blood flow by 40 percent. Ladies, light a lavender calendar or splash on some lavender perfume the next time you serve this tasty treat.
