Topamax (topiramate) is a daily, prophylactic medication used to treat migraines and to control epileptic seizures. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, according to Topamax.com, Topamax is thought to "calm" over-excitable nerve cells, which can help reduce migraine attacks and convulsions. Topamax is available for oral dispensation as a tablet or sprinkle capsule (topiramate coated beads in a gelatin capsule). Take Topamax as prescribed. Consult with a physician for questions regarding dosage or discontinued use. Patients taking Topamax may experience cognitive side effects ranging from general dysfunction and fatigue, to suicidal behavior.
General Dysfunction
Patients taking Topamax may experience various cognitive side effects. Topamax may trigger such effects as fatigue, confusion, dizziness and general coordination and concentration problems as reported by Drugs.com. Do not operate machinery or drive a vehicle until you discover how your body reacts to this medication. Report side effects to a physician if symptoms persist. You may also report side effects to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Suicidal Behavior
Topamax may increase the risk of suicidal behavior or thoughts. As reported by Merck.com, in December 2008 the FDA completed its analysis of reports of suicidality and issued a warning for Topamax and other antiepileptic medications. This warning included new statutes that such medication manufacturers are required to produce product labeling concerning the risk of suicidality, as well as to provide a medication guide to patients informing them of the risks of suicidal thoughts or actions. Contact your physician if suicidal thoughts, depression or any unusual change in behavior surface.
Other Considerations
Consult with a physician prior to taking this medication especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients predisposed to hepatic, renal or respiratory impairment are cautioned against taking Topamax due to increased risk of metabolic acidosis. Provide your physician with a detailed medical history before taking Topamax. Never hesitate to inquire about dosage or side effects you may be experiencing.
