Body hair grows in varying amounts, depending on the person. The functional purpose of it is to protect the skin from the sun, to disperse pheromones and to act as a dry lubrication system. When it grows in dark and thick, in areas like the chest, back, arms and legs, it can cause embarrassment and lead to a lower self-esteem. Both men and women can be plagued with excessive growth and there are several ways to remove it.
Step 1
Chop it down with an electric trimmer then shave off the remnants. Use the trimmer as close to the skin as possible, without scraping it. Wash your skin with warm water and apply shaving cream. Take a new razor blade and run it across your skin gently, taking small strokes. Remove all the hair and then take a shower to rinse off the shaving cream and hair.
Step 2
Use a depilatory cream to dissolve the hair. Apply the cream and leave it sit for as long as the manufacturer recommends. Wipe off the cream and hair with a damp washcloth. Continue in all areas where you have hair. Rinse the remaining cream off in the shower.
Step 3
Pluck hairs out by the roots with a pair of tweezers. Press your fingers onto your skin with the hair in the middle. Grab a hair with the tweezers close to the skin's surface. Pull it out in a single motion. Repeat until you have removed all the hairs.
Step 4
Visit a salon or spa to get your body hair waxed. In this procedure, the technician will apply hot wax with an applicator and allow it to harden. A cloth strip will then be placed over it and smoothed out. The strip then gets ripped off in a fast motion, taking the wax and hair along with it.
Step 5
Make an appointment with a licensed electrologist to get electrolysis done. In this procedure, a tiny needle is inserted into your hair follicles and an electric current is sent to the tip. The follicles die and the hair falls out. This hair loss can be permanent after several months of treatments.
Step 6
Get a laser hair removal treatment. With this treatment, a laser gets shot down onto your skin, where it targets melanin--the substance that gives hair its color. When the follicles get hit with the laser, the hair dies and falls out. This treatment can lead to permanent hair removal after several treatments.
Tips and Warnings
- You can use a home waxing kit, but it is a long process when you have excessive hair to remove.
- Waxing can be painful. Make sure you do not let a depilatory cream come in contact with your mouth, eyes or any location where you have open wounds.
