How to Relieve a Dry Scalp

Dry scalp has many cause and it can become itchy, irritated and uncomfortable. Common conditions, such as dandruff or an allergic reaction to styling products or shampoo, can cause dry scalp, though other causes, such as eczema can be the culprit. Identifying the cause of your dry scalp is instrumental in effectively treating it, though there are several things you can do to relieve dry scalp at home.

Step 1

Identify what might be causing your dry scalp so you can know better how to treat it. Inspect your scalp for light flakes of skin caused by dandruff, thick silvery patches which may indicate psoriasis or signs of other conditions, such as head lice. If in doubt, consult a dermatologist for diagnosis.

Step 2

Refrain from scratching your scalp, as itching can damage skin and cause irritation. If you must scratch, gently run a soft-tipped comb or soft bristled brush over the itchy areas instead of using your fingernails.

Step 3

Condition your scalp with warm coconut or olive oil. Warm 3 to 4 tbsp. of oil in a glass measuring cup which has been placed in a saucepan containing 3 to 4 inches of warm water. Heat the oil until warm to the touch and then massage it into your entire scalp. Allow it to sit for a 30 minutes before shampooing and rinsing.

Step 4

Wash your hair less often. Daily shampooing can dry the scalp. Consider washing your hair every other day. Use warm water to wash your hair instead of hot, to help relieve dry scalp and retain scalp moisture. If you need to wash your hair every day, consider doing so at night before bed, so natural oils can condition the scalp while you sleep.

Step 5

Increase the humidity in your home if you live in a dry climate, or one which is cold. Cold temperatures, along with the use of forced heat furnaces, or wood burning stoves, draw moisture from the air, which results in dry skin and hair. Using a humidifier helps replace humidity and can relieve dryness.

Step 6

Minimize the use of heated styling tools, such as a curling iron, blow dryer or flat iron. Direct heat can further increase scalp dryness.

Tips and Warnings

  • Commercial shampoos contain chemicals which may dry the scalp and hair, or cause irritation. Try oatmeal-based shampoos or those intended for dandruff treatment. Refrain from using styling products until your dry scalp has resolved.
