Body hair grows wildly in some and sparsely in others. If you fall into the former category, you know how frustrating and embarrassing this can be when you sport your bathing suit or wear revealing clothing. The best removal process really depends on your preference. There is certainly no shortage of techniques.
Shaving
If you do not mind a little bit of work every other day, then shaving is for you. This is done by washing the area with warm water, applying shaving cream and using short strokes with a new razor to remove the hair. Men often use this technique for facial hair and women use it for their legs and underarms. If you are man and you have thick body hair that you want to remove, trim it down with a pair of electric clippers before shaving, to make the process easier.
Depilatory
A depilatory cream has active chemicals that dissolve the keratin in the hair. This is the protein that gives hair its structure. After the cream is left on for several minutes, the hair is dissolved and then you wipe it off with a damp washcloth. This technique can keep you hair free for a few days or up to two weeks.
Epilation
Epilation is a type of hair removal that is normally done by women. In this procedure, the hair is pulled out with a hand held epilator that you pass over your skin. As opposed to using tweezers, several hairs are pulled out at once with this method.
Waxing
Waxing is a form of hair removal that can be done at home with a kit or at a salon. Wax is melted and then applied to the skin with an applicator stick. It sets up and then a durable cloth strip is placed over top. The wax then gets torn off in a fast motion, causing the hair to get ripped out by the roots. This procedure is also sometimes done with a sugar gel. You can expect anywhere from three to eight weeks of hair-free skin with this method.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis is performed by a licensed esthetician or electrologist. A fine needle is inserted into each of your hair follicles and an electric current is then sent to the tip. The hair root dies and the hair falls out. Repeated treatments over several months can lead to permanent hair removal.
Laser Removal
Laser hair removal is similar to electrolysis for its long lasting results. The difference is in the way it is performed. Melanin is a substance that gives hair and skin its pigmentation. With this treatment, a laser is sent down on the skin's surface where it attacks the melanin in the hair. The follicle then gets destroyed and the hair falls out. This treatment does not work well for people with light colored hair.
