Hair color, styling products, blow dryers and even the weather can suck the moisture out of your hair, leaving it damaged and brittle. If your hair is looking lifeless for any reason, there are solutions for dry, damaged hair that can bring your locks back to life.
Cut
A good haircut is one of the first solutions for dry, damaged hair since sometimes just cutting off the brittle ends can significantly improve hair's appearance. Work with your stylist to choose a cut that requires minimal product and styling to prevent further damage to your hair. Schedule regular trims to tidy up split ends.
Condition
Conditioner can restore moisture to damaged hair and seal cracks in damaged cuticles. You'll need two conditioners for maximum repair: a lightweight conditioner that you can use every time you wash your hair and an deep conditioning treatment that you can use a few times a month to fortify your hair.
Styling
Styling can damage your hair if you aren't careful. To protect your hair, make sure it's had time to air-dry before finishing if off with a blow-dryer, and use a heat protective spray on your hair before you use any styling product that involves heat on it, including blow dryers and flat irons.
Mask
Hair masks are designed to offer intensive treatments that rehabilitate dry hair. Look for masks that contain fatty alcohols--they'll usually show up on the label as stearyl alcohol or cetyl alcohol. Fatty alcohols improve the overall texture of dry, damaged hair. Another ingredient to look for is silicone, which smooths the surface of the hair shaft, preventing frizz and boosting shine. Silicone may be listed in the mask's ingredients as dimethicone or cyclomethicone.
Shampoo
Buying a shampoo that's formulated for dry hair is useful, but the real key to using shampoo in treating dry hair is using less shampoo. Most people don't need to wash their hair every day, and cutting your shampoo sessions back to once or twice a week can improve your hair's health and appearance.
