How to Make Massage Oils at Home

Making your own massage oils is a fairly easy process. In addition to allowing you to customize scents and intensity to your taste, making your own massage oil also gives you control over the ingredients that are in your oil, so you can make products that you know are safe for your friends and family. If you're going to make massage oils at home, start with a small batch to test the waters.

Step 1

Combine jojoba, grapeseed and avocado oils in a Mason jar. Add shea butter to the oil mixture.

Step 2

Add a generous scoop of dried herbs to the oil mixture. Use one herb or a combination of herbs to make up the scoop, depending on your preferences. Stir the herbs into the oil mixture.

Step 3

Fill a pot with water and put the Mason jar containing the oil mixture into the water, as though you're preparing a water bath. Heat the water to a gentle simmer on the stove, being careful not to let the water come to a boil. Let the mixture in the Mason jar simmer for about two hours.

Step 4

Let the mixture cool. When it has cooled, pour the contents of the jar through a cheesecloth into a glass container to strain the oil.

Step 5

Add six drops of vitamin oil to the top of the mixture. Consider jotting the date on the bottom of your jar so you know when it was made; massage oil usually lasts for about three months.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use a scoop of lavender or a combination of lavender, chamomile and calendula to make a soothing massage oil. For a more stimulating oil, use rosemary, lemon verbena or lemon balm, or mint. Mix different herbs to find a combination you like. If you prefer, you can use essential oils instead of dried herbs. Just skip the steeping process and add the essential oils directly to the base oil mixture. If you don't have or can't find one of the oils for the base mixture, you can increase the quantities of the other two oils. If you like, you can substitute sweet almond oil for one of the three oils in the base mixture.
