Head congestion can be very discomforting and inconvenient when you're trying to focus or get things accomplished. Because it typically isn't painful, it can be difficult to relieve. Changes in air pressure, stress, tension and sinus problems, in particular, can all cause head congestion. Luckily, there are steps you can take to get some relief.
Step 1
Use warm compresses. Heat a wet towel in the microwave for one minute, and place it over your forehead and nose. Breathe in the steam from the towel until the towel cools off. Repeat as needed. The warmth from the steam should help the muscles in and around your forehead to relax and promote some sinus drainage, if blockage is causing the congestion.
Step 2
Try aromatherapy. Boil some water and pour into a heat-safe bowl or container. Place 2-3 drops of scented peppermint or lavender oil into the water. Place your head over the water and inhale deeply. Similar to using a wet towel, the steam should relieve the head congestion and the notes from the peppermint and lavender can have a calming effect.
Step 3
Drink warm liquids such as tea, coffee or warm water. Changes in air pressure or contact with cold air can cause head congestion, and warm liquids help to regulate your body temperature.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water to loosen any mucus, or other substances, that may be clogging your nasal passages and causing congestion. Water increases the moisture and dilutes mucus, causing it to drain. Drink warm or room temperature water, as cold water can increase the severity of the congestion you're experiencing.
Step 5
Massage your head. Loosening the muscles around your head can reduce the congestion. Use your middle and pointer fingers to gently massage your temples, forehead, the area in front of your ears and the base of your neck. Rubbing peppermint or lavender oil on your hands before the massage is often comforting, as well.
Step 6
Increase the humidity in your home with a vaporizer or humidifier. Adding moisture to the air can help to re-balance the air pressure that may be causing your head congestion. The moisture will also allow your nasal passages to relax, eliminating the tightness you may be feeling because of the congestion.
Step 7
Take an over-the-counter decongestant. If you suffer from sinus or allergy problems, a decongestant will help to clear the nasal passages, thereby alleviating the head congestion.
Whenever possible, sit upright to promote sinus drainage, and as a natural adjustment to sinus pressure.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep yourself warm. A warmer body temperature will counteract the onset of congestion, and ward off congestion caused by cold air pressure.
