Male impotence (erectile dysfunction) is a condition characterized by the inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sex. According to the Mayo Clinic, this condition is common. A plethora of products are marketed for men with sexual problems, most of them supporting healthy sex lives by treating physical and psychological factors. Herbs and prescription medications are common treatment options, as well.
Medications
Prescription medications that treat impotence abound. Some of the most commonly used include brand name drugs such as Levitra, Cialis and Viagra. According to the Mayo Clinic, these medications are effective for most men with erectile difficulty, with few side effects. All of these drugs work in the same way, increasing levels of nitric oxide which causes blood vessels in the penis to open and relax. Men with heart problems, irregular blood pressure, leukemia, sickle cell anemia or history of stoke should not take these drugs.
Herbs
Gingko is a widely used herb that is thought to promote blood flow to the penis, increasing the chances of achieving and maintaining erection. Blood thinning is a known side effect of this herb.
Yohimbe is an herbal treatment for impotence and is also used in some prescription formulas. The herb is thought to work in two ways: by increasing blood flow in the genitals and as an aphrodisiac. Side effects include increased heart rate, dizziness, nausea, headache and complications among those with kidney disease and mood disorders.
Ginseng is another well-known herb, available in teas, capsules and tablets for increased energy and improved sexual function. While reactions to ginseng are unlikely, those taking antidepressants should not use the herb, as it may cause mania, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Penile Pumps
Penile pumps are devices designed to improve blood flow to the penis, which helps impotent men achieve erection. The penile pump has several parts, including a plastic tube that fits over the penis, rubber constriction bands and a pump (powered by hand or with batteries). These devices are a good choice for men who don't have good results with medications, and who are not considering surgery, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Sex Therapy
Psychosexual therapy may be an effective treatment for male impotence when relationship obstacles or psychological factors hamper a male's ability to perform. Frequent sessions with a professional may help resolve major concerns and issues, and teach men techniques to improve intimacy. Single men may attend one-on-one sessions, while those in a relationship can involve their partner.
