Nobody likes to wake up to find dark, purplish circles under their eyes that announce to the world that they didn't get enough sleep. Lack of sleep is not always the cause of these circles, but it is usually what people attribute it to. One way to reduce the look of dark circles under your eyes is to lower your stress. Also, using cucumbers and rosewater-soaked cottons balls can also relax the skin around your eyes leading to less noticeable circles.
Step 1
Practice daily breathing exercises. In yoga, breathing is known as pranayama, or the control of one's breath. Dr. Savitha Suri says that doing pranayama every day will help get rid of dark circles. Start with an abdominal breathing exercise that you can do lying down or sitting. Sit up straight in a comfortable cross-legged. Relax your hands in your lap or place one hand under your belly button. Breathe deeply through your nose and draw the air deep into your abdomen. Hold your breath in for five seconds. Exhale out through your nose completely. Your hand should move up and down as you breathe.
Step 2
Dip two cotton rounds in cucumber juice squeezed from freshly grated cucumber. Lie down on a bed or couch . Put the cotton rounds on your eyes. Use a potato if you prefer. Dr. Suri says that this is the best way to relax tired eyes and reduce dark, under-eye circles.
Step 3
Apply rosewater to two round cotton pads. Place the cotton on top of a bottle of rose water and turn it over to get some rose water onto the cotton rounds. Lie down, close your eyes, and lay the cotton pads onto your eyelids. Remain there for five minutes, as recommended by Dr. Suri.
Step 4
Thinly slice two sections of cucumber. Lie down and place the cucumber onto your eyelids. Leave the slices of cucumber on your eyes for several minutes. Practice some deep breathing if you wish to further relax.
Tips and Warnings
- Daily use of an eye cream can also reduce dark circles, especially an eye cream that contains botanical skin lighteners like licorice and kojic acid. Heidi Waldorf, M.D., a New York City dermatologist, advises eye cream because the higher concentration of emollients found in eye creams than other facial creams. These emollients cause the skin to plump and thicken, thereby hiding the dark circles more thoroughly.
