Chronic Cryptic Tonsillitis Symptoms

Chronic cryptic tonsillitis is a form of tonsillitis. The "crypts" refer to small nooks and crannies in the tonsils. When small food particles or other debris get trapped there, they can prolong tonsil infection. Although not a serious health concern, chronic cryptic tonsillitis and its symptoms can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Because it's difficult to treat, the condition usually requires the tonsils be removed.

Pain

An intermittent sore throat is a chief complaint among people with chronic cryptic tonsillitis. This condition can go on for months or even years, because the sore throat comes and goes and doesn't produce the larger-scale pain that accompanies other forms of tonsillitis.

Tonsil Stones

The existence of white particles called tonsil stones is the most apparent symptom of chronic cryptic tonsillitis. Although some people can physically remove these stones with a pick or cotton swab, the effort is temporary; the stones are sure to return. Removal of the tonsils is the only sure way to eliminate this problem because antibiotic treatment is only helpful on a short-term basis, according to the University of Texas Medical School at Houston's Texas Pediatric Surgical Associates website.

Bad Breath

Tonsil stones are particles of bacteria and dead cells lodged within the "crypts" of the tonsils. They tend to cause extreme bad breath, which is obvious to the sufferer and others. Unfortunately, the odor cannot be easily eliminated and does not respond well to over-the-counter mouthwashes or halitosis treatments.
