5 Things You Need to Know About Split Ends

1. Split Ends Spelled Out

Old age causes our skin to wrinkle, our skin to sag and old hair may signal split ends. If your hair is as long as your bra strap it may be six years old. As your hair ages and is exposed to the elements and is dried, curled, ironed and who knows what else, the internal hair structure is damaged. This damage causes splits.

2. Cuticle and Cortex Care and Condition

Your nails have cuticles and so does your hair. The outside layer of hair, called the cuticle, is made of overlapping protein scales; you can damage the scales with heat, brushing or coloring your hair. The damage causes the hair to look dull and makes the split end problem worse. The inner layer of hair is the cortex and you damage it the same way, with heat, chemicals, sun, chlorine and other hair enemies. Once your hair loses its moisture from damage, you can't get it back. Conditioners only mask the problem, they don't cure it.

3. Cut Out Split Ends

You can remove split ends easily. Take a small amount of hair and gently twist it. The split ends will spread out at the end of the twist. Using small, sharp scissors, snip off just the very end of the hairs to remove the split ends. Try to cut the same amount from the ends of each section.

4. Split Ends Repair

To mask the bushy look that split ends give hair, add some moisture to the outside of the hair. Apply a conditioning treatment product available at beauty supply stores. Some of the new products give your hair a smoother, shinier look, and they can improve the condition and manageability of hair ravaged by split ends. If you prefer natural, homemade treatments, mix mayonnaise and olive oil, or avocado and jojoba oil together. Smear the mix onto your just shampooed hair and wrap your head in plastic wrap for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Shampoo once or twice to remove the oils. Your hair will be shinier and smoother.

5. Don't Overwork Your Hair

Treat your hair gently to prevent split ends. Wet hair is especially susceptible to stretching and breaking off, so brush it with a wide-tooth comb gently. If you have time, allow your hair to dry naturally; anytime you can forgo a hair dryer you spare your hair more damaging heat. Condition after every shampoo or use a leave-in treatment to reduce moisture loss and tangles. Only color your roots, and not your whole head of hair, whenever possible. Chemicals dry your hair and cause split ends.
