Antihistamines are sold under many brand names that include Allegra, Zyrtec, Periactin, Unisom, Atarax, Benadryl, Clarinex, Vistaril, Sominex, Nolahist and many others. Antihistamines may be used to treat a variety of conditions including insomnia, vomiting, nausea, dizziness and others, but are most commonly associated with the treatment of allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching and sneezing. Antihistamines are also an ingredient in some sleep aids. They are available in both prescription-level strengths and as over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
Common Side Effects
Most common side effects of antihistamines are mild and will clear up when usage is discontinued. Unless an antihistamine product is a sleep aid, drowsiness can be an unwanted side effect. Other common side effects include weight gain due to an increase in appetite, dry mouth, a cough, thickening mucus or nasal congestion.
Serious Side Effects
There are many potential serious side effects from antihistamines, but they are rare, according to the Mayo Clinic. Consult a doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of these or others that you consider serious. They include throat soreness, abnormal weakness, uncommon bleeding, abnormal bruising, unusual tiredness, a rapid heartbeat called tachycardia, pain in the abdomen, tingling sensations, chills, chest tightness, discoloration of urine or stools, bodily swelling or a cough. Others include diarrhea, a rash on your skin, swallowing difficulties, shortness of breath, dizziness, seizures, an irregular heartbeat, skin redness, a fever, itching and headaches, among others.
Other Concerns
If you take more antihistamines than the recommended or prescribed amount, you might experience experience visual, auditory or sensory hallucinations, insomnia, clumsiness, breathing difficulties, seizures, severe drowsiness, bodily flushing or hot flashes, or severe dryness in the throat, nose or mouth. Seek medical attention right away if you suspect overdose.
