1. Prevention Is Possible

As if getting acne isn't enough, some people develop acne scars as a lasting reminder. If you have severe acne, you may develop scars because of what's called nodules. Nodules are pus-filled lumps or cysts that appear under your skin. Not only can nodules leave scars, but many people tend to pick at or pop their pimples, making scarring even worse. You must treat pimples as soon as you can to prevent or at least limit acne scars. Wear sunscreen, because a lot of sun exposure can interfere with the healing process. Definitely, don't squeeze or pick at the pimples. See your dermatologist for treatment. She can prescribe creams like tretinoin, which can help.

2. Out With the Old, In With the New

Laser resurfacing helps eliminate serious acne scarring. It's done in your dermatologist's or doctor's office. He uses a laser to remove the damaged, scarred layer of your skin. The laser then tightens the middle layer of skin. It takes up to one week for your skin to heal after the treatment. Once it does, your complexion will be much smoother. The laser treatment doesn't necessarily hurt, but your skin will be numbed first with local anesthesia. Set aside anywhere from a few minutes and an hour to undergo laser acne treatment. Laser treatment costs between $300 and $1,500 per session.

3. Go Deeper With a Laser

Fractional laser therapy is another, newer form of scar treatment. It works similar to normal laser resurfacing, but goes much deeper in your skin. It heals the scarring from beneath. It doesn't take as long to heal, because the top layer of your skin is still intact. Some doctors are seeing a 50 to 60 percent increase in skin condition after a few treatments. Because it's the latest acne scarring treatment, though, fractional laser therapy is expensive. It will run you between $1,500 and $2,500. Check with your insurance company before considering the treatment. It's not usually covered.

4. Brush It Off

Dermabrasion removes the dead layer of cells on your skin's surface. The doctor uses a rotating wire brush to exfoliate and wear down the skin surface. It's a good method to use if you have minor to moderate acne scarring. Dermabrasion will lighten areas of darker pigmentation and improve your skin's texture. It takes up to 3 weeks for your skin to recover from dermabrasion.

5. Peel Acne Scars Away

Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of acne scars. The doctor applies a chemical solution to your face and leaves it on for a few minutes. The chemicals dissolve surface tissue cells and promote new tissue to grow. Your skin looks and feels better after getting a chemical peel. The treatments range from $600 to $900.
