1. I'm Turning Into my Father
Most baldness and hair growth patterns are hereditary. You can do little to prevent hair loss if it's in your DNA. While most men and women experience hair loss as they age, it is still a result of their genes. No vitamins or super foods will magically grow your hair if you are doomed. Many men have embraced baldness by simply shaving off what little hair they may have. Other men try regrowing the lost hair with creams or turn to hair transplants, otherwise known as hair replacement.
2. Growing Industry
The hair transplant industry has come a long way form the days when men got plugs that looked so bad they needed a rug to cover the damage. Technological advancements have moved the procedure to new heights with transplants that look and feel as natural as real hair. Top-notch hair density can be achieved in one surgical visit, with little or no scarring. Look for a certified physician to perform the restoration.
3. Tiny Blades
A hair replacement doctor uses an extremely fine knife, the size of a hair follicle. Fine strips of hair are first removed from the back of the head, where the hair will continue to grow. It is then inserted into the bald spots. Mini-grafts close up the area where the hair was removed, leaving virtually no scar. Each strip of hair that is removed from the back of the head contains about three or four hair follicles. The hair is transplanted in a random pattern so that it looks more natural. Surgeons will even place the hairs sideways as hair naturally grows. As many as 3,000 grafts can be done in a couple hours under local anesthesia.
4. Quick Recovery
Most men can go back to their normal routines in a day or so. They will receive a topical ointment to put on the new hair at night to prevent infection and mild pain pills for any discomfort. Antibiotics are usually given to reduce swelling and patients can leave the office with no bandages. After a check-up the next day, patients can wash their new hair and comb it into place. Heavy exercise and weight lifting is not recommended for at least a week after the stitches are removed.
5. Keep on Growing
The newly transplanted hair begins to grow back right away for some people. Others may take up to two or three months to see any length in the new hair. Follow up with a product such a Rogaine can help to accelerate the process. You can return to the hair replacement doctor in another four to six months to make your thinning scalp even thicker with additional grafts. When other parts of your head start thinning, you can always head back for a touch up
