Dry shampoo is great when you don't have time to take a shower, dry your hair and get to work on time. It's also used in hospitals for patients who can't get wet or are unable to take showers. Dry shampoo is green friendly because it saves money, water and electricity (you don't have to blow dry your hair). Dry shampoo is a powder that absorbs the oil in the hair and leaves it feeling fresh. It's not effective as using wet shampoo and water but is a great substitute when you're in a time pinch. Dry shampoo can be found in most drug stores. Making homemade dry shampoo is easy and cheap. It's made out of household items, so if you're having a hair emergency you can grab something out of your kitchen and be finished washing your hair within two minutes.
Step 1
Put 2 or 3 tbsp. cornmeal into a bowl. If you don't have cornmeal, use cornstarch. The cornmeal (or cornstarch) absorbs oil and dirt.
Step 2
Add a small amount of baby powder into the bowl. The baby powder further absorbs oil and makes the mixture smell fresh. A sprinkle is all you need; if you use too much, your hair may take on a gray color if you have dark hair.
Step 3
Consider adding a few drops of lemon oil and castor oil. If you don't have time, this isn't necessary. However, if you're using dry shampoo to save money, water and to avoid blow-drying your hair, you may want to add these oils. The lemon and castor oils cleanse the hair and scalp and moisturize the hair.
Step 4
Apply the mixture by grabbing pinches of the dry shampoo with your fingers and rubbing them into different areas of your scalp. Work the mixture through your hair. Use a comb to evenly distribute the dry shampoo.
Step 5
Shampoo your hair over a sink and have a vacuum cleaner handy to suck up any excess powder.
Tips and Warnings
- Use more for longer hair and less for shorter hair. Dry shampoo gives best results on short hair. If you have long hair, focus on applying the shampoo to the roots to absorb excess oil. Don't pour the shampoo over your entire head. It could be a mess.
