Natural Nail Treatments

Hands are one of the most difficult body parts to conceal. Since they're used in almost every activity, you should do as much as you can to take care of them. If you don't have the time, money or inclination to have manicures at nail salons, you can still have pretty, healthy, well-groomed fingernails. One advantage of keeping your nails naturally manicured is you can see the nail bed, which may indicate health issues. According to Tamara Lior, MD, a Ceveland Clinic dermatologist, the nails are a gauge of lung or heart health.

Scrub for Dry Cuticles and Hands

Combine 2 tbsp. of fine-textured sea salt with 2 tbsp. of oatmeal and 1 tsp. of baking soda and add water to make a paste. Rub the paste over your dry hands, fingers and around the nail area to slough off the dry, dead skin. Wash and dry your hands, then moisturize them.

Soak for Stronger Nails

Mix 1 tbsp. of honey, 1 egg yolk and 1/4 cup of milk in a small bowl. Immerse your fingertips in the mixture and soak them for about 15 minutes. The protein and calcium in the ingredients will help strengthen your nails.

Milk Soak

Pour 1 cup of whole milk into a small bowl and immerse your fingers. Let them soak for about 20 minutes. Then, rinse your hands. Using an angled manicure stick, gently push your cuticles back. Buff your nails until they shine. This soak will not only add shine to your nails, it will soften the skin around them.

Oil Massage

Put 1/4 cup of olive oil or avocado oil in a small bowl and heat in the microwave for approximately 15 to 20 seconds, until warm. Test it to make sure it's not too hot for comfort. Apply the oil to your hands and gently massage them. Rub the oil into the cuticles and all around the nail areas. Leave the oil on your hands for up to an hour before washing with mild hand soap. Pat your hands dry. Buff the nails until they shine.

Whitening the Nails

If your nails are discolored from excessive or dark nail polish, you can bring them back close to their natural color. Mix 1 part freshly squeezed lemon juice with 2 parts whitening toothpaste. Apply this mixture to your nails and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse off the mixture and evaluate the nails. Repeat the process, if needed. Always moisturize your hands and nails after you wash them.
