How to Grow Your Hair Faster

Growing your hair faster after your stylist chops too much off--or just to shorten the amount of time it takes to get the long locks you desire--can be done with diet and exercise. Certain nutrients are important for hair growth, and making sure you get enough of these nutrients is necessary for quick hair growth, according to naturopathic physician Dr. Nicole Sundene. Dr. Sundene is the lead author and editor-in-chief of the "Kitchen Table Medicine" online magazine. Increasing the circulation of blood in your scalp is also beneficial for fast hair growth.

Step 1

Turn your head upside down and flip your hair over to brush it each morning. Use a brush made from natural materials. Do 50 strokes from the neck to the tips. Smooth hair down with your other hand between brush strokes to reduce static. Brushing increases circulation, but too much can damage your hair.

Step 2

Do some yoga. Yoga has several inverted postures, or poses that put your head below your heart. Gravity will help pull more blood to your scalp so your hair follicles get an adequate supply. Learn some helpful poses, like downward facing dog and dolphin, in a class or from a DVD, and then practice them throughout the day. Put your forearms on the ground and clasp hands to do dolphin pose. Walk your feet behind you as far as you can while still being able to press your heels into the floor. Lift your hips high like your body is making an up arrow sign. Relax your head. Pull your shoulders back and tighten your abs. Breathe deeply in and out through your nose for a few deep breaths.

Step 3

Grind up fresh flax seeds in a coffee grinder and add them to yogurt, smoothies, soups or salads once a day. Use 1 to 3 tbsp. of flax seeds. Purchase and freeze pre-ground seeds, if you prefer. Flax is high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, both of which contribute to healthy hair.

Step 4

Take a multivitamin and multimineral supplement. Nutrients such as the B vitamins are critical for hair growth.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose highlighting over coloring. Highlights require only root touch-ups, whereas coloring must always redo all your hair, which is more damaging. Blunt haircuts can be less than ideal for hair growth. Get the ends tapered to resemble a half-circle instead of a straight line.
  • Don't wash your hair every day because it can rob your hair of essential oils. Shampooing your hair too often can make it look greasy.
