Wrinkling of the skin is a normal part of aging. Technology has allowed women and men who have facial wrinkles around their mouths to reduce the lines and creases significantly. Botox is one such treatment, but not everyone wants to have the toxin injected into their body. Antiaging creams and other cosmetic procedures may be able to reduce wrinkles around your mouth. Protecting your skin from the elements can also help.

Step 1

Reduce wrinkles around your mouth by protecting yourself from environmental factors that prematurely age your skin. Excessive exposure to the sun can damage your skin and create facial wrinkles. Protect yourself by using sunscreen when you are outside.

Step 2

Quit smoking if you indulge in the habit; keep your skin smoother for longer by not starting to smoke. Remaining smoke-free can also minimize wrinkling around the mouth, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Step 3

Apply a wrinkle or antiaging cream to the skin around your mouth to reduce fine lines and creases. Products of this kind contain one of more ingredients that, according to the Mayo Clinic, can help make wrinkles less noticeable. Look for creams or lotions that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, retinol, coenzyme Q10 or kinetin. Your doctor may be able to give you stronger, prescription-strength products as well.

Step 4

Opt for a skin surfacing procedure that removes wrinkles from your face, or at least reduces the severity of the creasing. New York-based cosmetic surgeon Dr. Michael Sachs explains that dermabrasion can help eliminate wrinkles near your mouth. Dermabrasion is a treatment that removes the top layer of your skin, similar to a sander. When new skin grows, it is smooth, without wrinkling, but full results and recovery can take months.

Step 5

Reduce facial wrinkling around the mouth with laser therapy. Light beams are used to damage the outer-most layer of your skin, called the epidermis. The heat generated by the laser prompts your body to create more collagen, which makes the new skin smooth when it heals.

Step 6

Undergo a chemical peel that destroys the wrinkled layer of skin, allowing a firmer, smoother layer to develop. The Mayo Clinic explains that people who choose this method to reduce their wrinkles usually require several treatments to see results.

Step 7

Select a more-invasive treatment for wrinkles that is similar to Botox treatments in terms of the method used, but does not used the Botulinum toxin. Soft-tissue filler treatments are available using fat from other areas of your own body, as well as collagen. The filler is injected into deep creases around your mouth and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Your body absorbs the filler over time, requiring maintenance treatments several times a year, according to the Mayo Clinic.
