5 Things You Need to Know About Mountain Bikes

1. Spendy Bikes

Purchasing a mountain bike is not as confusing or complicated as you might think. If you're a beginner or a casual mountain biker, you don't need to spend thousands of dollars on a bike. You can find a decent mountain bike for under $500. If you're an avid mountain biker, you may want to spend more on a bike that can withstand the wear and tear of rougher and longer rides. Also, some mountain bikes are more lightweight than others, which can be beneficial on higher level-rated mountain biking trails with lots of obstacles and jumps. A heavier bike can hold you back so just make sure your lightweight bike is sturdy.

2. Maintain the Thrill

No matter what type of mountain bike you own, you need to maintain it. Cleaning your bike is going to be the foundation of your maintenance routine. When you clean your bike, keep in mind that you generally don't need to use a lot of water. However, when you do hose down your bike, make sure to dry your bike off thoroughly to prevent rusting. Typically, just use a dry cotton rag for cleaning; however, you can also buy cleaning solution at a bike shop. In addition to cleaning your bike, you will also want to keep it well lubricated. Maintaining the chain, for one, is important for keeping your mountain bike in tip-top shape. Mud, dirt and excess water can mess up chains and other parts. Besides keeping it clean with a basic wipe down, it's also important to get your bike serviced at a bike shop at least every few months, and more often if you ride a lot. Take care of your mountain bike, and it will take care of you.

3. You're the Mountain Bike Mechanic

If you ride a lot, you know by now what equipment to bring with you when mountain biking. If you don't, or have just been lucky enough not to experience any real problems on a trail, take note. First, it's a good idea to bring an extra tire tube, especially if you plan to take a long ride. Also, learn how to change it out. Nothing puts a damper on the day like having to walk your bike back and missing the rest of the ride. It's important, too, to know how to fix your mountain bike chain. Many bike shops offer mountain biking classes where you can learn the basics of fixing your bike while on the go.

4. What Else You Need

Besides basic maintenance equipment for your mountain bike, you'll need other equipment and supplies for your ride, such as water, sunglasses and a helmet. You can purchase snap on holders, containers and wallets for your mountain bike at most bike shops. Even small first aid kits are available.

5. Safety First

Understand mountain bikes, trails and your own physical limitations before riding. As with all extreme sports, what often looks fun and easy on television actually takes a lot of practice, endurance and strength to perform well. Pay attention to level ratings on mountain bike trails, and avoid long rides if you're not used to intense exercise. Become comfortable with your mountain bike first and understand how it moves and handles obstacles before pushing your limits.
