5 Things You Need to Know About Using An Elliptical To Tone Thighs

1. Save Your Knees

Running is great exercise. It tones your legs, buttocks, helps you lose weight and burn calories. But, everybody will tell you that running's really hard on your knees, back, hips, ankles and other joints. Most runners end up having to give the sport up over time because of its affect on their joints. It's simply too hard on your body. Elliptical machines, though, are just as beneficial as running without the risks. That's because they take the stress off your joints--there's no harsh impact on pavement. The elliptical trainer burns a major amount of calories and is a great way to cross train without hurting your body.

2. Strengthen Your Core

The core of your body is tied to every other part. If you have a strong core, you'll have a better body overall. While an elliptical trainer works your thighs and the rest of your lower body like nobody's business, it also works your upper body and core. Your entire body is engaged in strength training and cardio--simultaneously. As you hold yourself on the elliptical, moving your arms and legs, your core is holding your body steadily. So, as you work on diminishing your big thighs, you're also working your abs, back, arms, shoulders and calves.

3. Jam as You Tone

Many elliptical machines have built in speaker systems. This way you can jam to your favorite music as you're doing something about your big thighs. Choose an upbeat song that keeps you moving. It's even better if you feel compelled to sing along. Not only will the singing get your heart rate up (Have you ever tried to sing while running? Similar results!) but it'll also get your mind off the thigh exercises.

4. Feel the Burn

Go ahead--feel it! Feel it yet? Then keep going! Your elliptical trainer will really work out your thighs and buttocks area. As you pump up and down, you're giving your legs a workout like they've never had before. Keep in mind that you'll feel the burn shortly after starting your workout if you're new at it. Over time, you'll be able to do the elliptical machines for a longer workout. You'll develop stamina as your body become accustomed to the workout. Be prepared, though, because your first few sessions will probably make you sore. It'll feel like you just got off a horse!

5. Add In Weight Training

The elliptical machine works your entire body, provided you're moving your arms, too. You'll burn a crazy amount of calories and fat will start dropping off several parts of your body. There's really no way to lose body fat from just one area, also known as spot reducing. Instead, tone your thighs by doing thigh exercises. Firm them up by weight training and doing barbell squats. These will tone your thighs, gluts and hamstrings. Do 12 to 15 reps for best results and stick to it! Your big thighs will be a thing of the past!
