5 Things You Need to Know About Softball Third Basemen

1. Strong Arm

Having a strong arm is probably the biggest asset a third baseman in softball can have. A strong arm is imperative because a third baseman will have to the throw all the way across the field to first base with proper velocity many times during a softball game. Players at other positions can get by with average arm strength, but not a third baseman.

2. The Hot Corner

They call third base "the hot corner" for a reason. Most hitters are right handed and have a tendency to hit the softball to the right side of the field. This makes it imperative that a third baseman be an above average fielder and have a quick reaction time. Remember to stay down on the incoming softball and not to rise up until you have the ball safely in your glove.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

To get better at the position, it is important that the third baseman take fielding and throwing practice as often as possible. Third base may be the most difficult position on the field. You can't master the position without practice. Have another person hit you grounders until you become comfortable fielding from any angle, and practice the throw to first base. You may want to purchase a catching net so you can practice the throws on your own.

4. Guard the Line

When fielding a baseball at third base, there are some issues that are specific to the position. When it is late in a close game, the third baseman wants to play close to the baseline to guard against any extra-base hits. In addition, if the batter is bunting, the third baseman must realize this and come up to cover the bunt because bunts usually come down the third base line.

5. Stay Alert

Do not let your mind wander when you are playing third base. A third baseman must stay alert at all times because, as the saying goes, "The ball will find you when you least expect it." If you are not alert, you risk the chance of a line drive hitting you. In addition, knowing what a particular batter's strengths and weaknesses are can help you play the position. For instance, some hitters have a tendency to the pull the ball, and as most batters are right-handers, that means a lot of action for the third baseman.
