A hydration system is a backpack-like apparatus filled with liquid. People drink water or sports drinks from hydration systems. This is done while performing activities when you need more drink what a water bottle can hold. Hydration packs are popular for activities such as day hiking, cross country skiing and long distance cycling.
A hydration system comes in 3 parts: bladder, hose and bite valve. The flexible hydration bladder is usually plastic and holds the fluid. The bladder is longer than wide to fit the proportions of the human back. It typically holds anywhere from 34 to 100 oz. of fluid.
The hose joins the bladder at the bottom. Depending on the model, the hose can detach and you can fill the bladder from the spout. Other models have a bladder that can open at the top and be filled from there.
The bite valve, located at the end of the hose, is where people drink the fluid. The bite valve has a cap or plug to seal and prevent leakage.
What to Look for
Keep in mind your event. Some hydration packs are designed specifically for biking or hiking but not both. Others can fit the demands of both sports.
Think about how much gear you have to bring with you. During day trips you want to take food, a camera, first aid supplies and blankets or clothing along with fluid. Some backpacks have an insulated pocket designed specifically for hydration systems.
Consider the possibility of extreme weather. For those hiking, climbing, biking or skiing in extreme elements, get a hydration pack with insulation. Many systems have insulated bladders and hoses to prevent fluid from freezing or becoming too hot. Insulation can also be bought separately.
Hydration systems can become infested with germs if they aren't cleaned regularly. Find one "that has a wide (bladder) opening that is easy to clean," said Platypus Brand manager, Erik Flink. "Especially if you are using sports drinks."
Common Pitfalls
Look for a taste-free bladder and tubing. Non taste-free materials can make your water or sports drink taste like plastic.
A huge complaint is that many hydration systems leak. This is due to poor bite valves and/or faulty hose attachments. Find a hydration system with a quality bladder, hose and bite valve designed to prevent leakage.
Don't buy hydration systems designed for children. Children's bodies are not fully developed and therefore don't have sufficient heating and cooling systems like adults. If a couple water bottles don't suffice on a hike, don't bring the kids.
