1. Clean Your House and Your Body
Spring and early summer are often when we think about doing a big cleaning, such as clearing out the dust and cobwebs accumulated over the winter. But it's also a great time to think about cleaning out your body with a cleansing fast. It's a good way to jumpstart your summer activities and align your insides with your healthy outsides. A good cleansing fast will help eliminate the toxins, fat and plaque that have built up while you were being more sedentary and indulging in more comfort foods indoors.
2. Drink for Life
Many people do not put anything into their mouths other than water during a cleansing fast. If you choose a water-only fast, you should be prepared to be very weak and not plan any activities outside of your home or place of rest. You will experience low blood sugar levels and low electrolyte levels, which could leave you dizzy and disoriented. Let someone know that you are doing the fast alone so they can check on you periodically.
3. Juice it up
Make your own juices for the best cleansing. Fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamins and minerals can be used on a cleansing fast for a weekend or for weeks at a time because you will be getting all the nutrients your body needs while eliminating harmful toxin buildup. So put fruits and vegetables in a juicer and drink for health.
4. The Best Ingredients
Use juices that are low in sugar. The more natural the ingredients, the closer to a pure cleansing your body will receive. Juices with acids (such as lemon and grapefruit) are excellent sources of cleansing. Also, ginger and cayenne pepper will add more healing push to the cleansing. Carrots, apples, grapes and celery are common juices that you can find in most health food stores. Don't forget: keep taking your multivitamins while you fast.
5. Not the Best Weight Loss Tool
While fasting once or twice a year can be a great way to cleanse the body, it is not the best way to lose weight. Sure, you will lose pounds, but they will quickly reappear when you finally do eat. When fasting, the body goes into starvation mode and begins to store fat. Long-term or regular fasting will break down efficient muscles you've worked so hard to develop and store nutrients in the fat deposits, negating the purpose of a healthy body in the first place.
