1. Getting to Know Shiatsu
Shiatsu is an ancient form of acupressure massage based on multiple Japanese healing principles. It is thought that the stimulation of specific points on the body can help to stimulate the bodies energy system, in turn increasing circulation, releasing tension and relieving a variety of ailments. Using shiatsu for flatulence and bloating is just one example of the many ways that you can find natural relief from digestive disorders, indigestion, occasional gas or even pre-menstrual syndrome.
2. Feeling the Pressure
Pressure points are in the same general position on every body; however, the untrained individual may struggle at first when attempting to find them. When using shiatsu for self treatment of flatulence and bloating, you must use not only physical sensations but also your intuition when seeking out pressure points. Pressure points often feel like either hollow or solid points in the muscle tissue and may feel different than surrounding tissue both to the touch and in physical sensation. Learning how to find pressure points will take time and practice, so be patient and use your intuition.
3. Eliminating Gas With a Foot Massage
Two important shiatsu pressure points can be found on the feet which will help to naturally relieve flatulence and bloating. Cross your ankle over your knee and use your thumb to find the pressure point which is located on the arch about 1 finger's width from the ball of the foot. Hold the pressure point for at least 1 minute on each foot to calm an upset stomach, reduce gas and stimulate overall circulation. The second pressure point is located where the bones of the big toe and second toe meet on the top of the foot and should be held for at least 1 minute on each foot to eliminate gases.
4. Soothing a Stomach With Shiatsu
The first pressure point to help soothe the stomach is located about 2 finger widths above the fold of the wrist between the two arm bones on the top of the arm. Hold this point for at least 1 minute before repeating on the opposite arm. Finally, a pressure point located about 4 finger widths below the kneecap and about 1 inch from the shin bone not only helps to relief an upset stomach, it also helps to aid digestion and reduce bloating. Again, hold for up to 1 minute and repeat on the opposite leg.
5. Shiatsu Treats Symptoms, But May Not Treat the Cause
Reoccurring flatulence and bloating may be the sign of a more serious problem. While shiatsu is perfect to soothe occasional digestive upset, chronic gas and stomach pain should not be ignored. If you suffer from gas and stomach upset on a regular basis, you should speak to your doctor about possible causes.
