1. E Is For Estrogen

Most people associate estrogen with women, when in fact males produce the same hormone. Generally linked to the female body's reproductive cycle, estrogen refers to any of a group of chemically similar hormones found in people and animals. In humans, these hormones have an impact on nearly all of our body's cells, organs and functions. They control our evolution and development, our tissue and sexual functions, how our bodies process food and respond to emergencies, even our temperament.

2. Here's to a Healthier You

Typically, women experience changes in their estrogen levels during menopause and the year that follows (perimenopause). As a result of this decreased hormone, women become susceptible to urinary tract infections; experience vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and thinning of the vaginal and urethra walls; and bone loss. Estrogen supplements natural or synthetic are recommended for treating the symptoms of menopause, preventing osteoporosis and improving a woman's general health.

3. When to Supplement

Consider using natural estrogen supplements if you are going through menopause and seeking drug-free relief for your symptoms; you are experiencing an imbalance of hormones; you underwent a hysterectomy or natural or surgical menopause and continue to experience hot flashes; or you are against hormone/estrogen replacement therapy. Consult with your doctor before taking a natural estrogen supplement. Ask if they will negatively affect any medications you are taking or existing health concerns and what the possible side effects are.

4. Rub It In

Estrogen creams are a natural supplement that mixes oils, vitamins and red clover. Products, such as EstroCare, Emerita and Balance HRT, relieve many menopausal symptoms for women such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, insomnia, incontinence, hormonal imbalance, decreased libido, painful sex, loss of hair and aging skin. Rub these creams on a rotating basis to your chest, inner arms and legs, wrists and breasts before bed for 14 days. If creams aren't for you try an herbal supplement, such as Remifemin, to relieve your menopausal symptoms. Purchase these products online or at most health food stores.

5. Find It In Your Food

Food is one of the best sources of natural estrogen supplements. In recent years, soy has gained notoriety as a popular source of the hormone, whether it be soy milk, soybeans or soy yogurt. Other foods high in natural estrogens are licorice, flax, anise, sesame and sunflower seeds; grains such as oats, wheat, rice and barley, vegetables, including celery, carrots, beets, tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, peppers, potatoes and yams; fruits, such as oranges, cherries, plums, dates and pomegranates and garlic.
