Millions of people worldwide are affected by age spots or liver spots. This skin discoloration is commonly caused by overexposure to the sun's rays and the natural aging process. Age spots can manifest anywhere on your body but are most commonly seen in sun exposed areas such as your face, forehead, arms and shoulders. Age spots do not require any medical treatment and are harmless. However, since age spots are permanent and can affect the appearance of your face, you might want to undergo a few methods to eliminate them.
Step 1
Apply an over-the-counter bleaching cream to the affected areas on your face. Make sure the product contains hydroquinone, a potent chemical which bleaches the skin. If used as directed, bleaching creams can gradually lighten age spots in one to two months.
Step 2
Talk to a dermatologist about getting dermabrasion. This medical technique involves using a rotating sterile brush to remove the first layer of your skin. This will cause a new layer of skin to grow in its place after a week. Scabs will form and skin reddening will occur during the first few days, but will permanently vanish along with the age spots in about two weeks.
Step 3
Consider undergoing a chemical peel to remove facial age spots. This technique involves applying an acidic solution such as beta hydroxy acid to the affected areas of your face. It works by dissolving the outer layer of your facial skin, down to the age spots. Skin peeling will start to occur and new skin will form in about three to five days.
Step 4
Apply lemon or lime juice to the age spots. Slice a fresh lemon or lime in half and slowly massage it directly onto the age spots. Leave it on your skin for about 30 minutes, then rinse and pat dry using a clean towel. Do this every day to help lighten age spots in about three to four months. Avoid using concentrated lemon/lime juices that come in the lime-shaped plastic bottles. These types of juices are rich in sugar and preservatives, which can irritate and dry up your skin.
