There's really only one method you can use to remove facial hair forever, and it can often be quite costly, especially if you have a great deal of hair on your face. However, there are two other medical treatments you can use to slow facial hair growth, making it less of a problem.
Step 1
Use electrolysis to remove your facial hair. Electrolysis is a permanent solution for removing unwanted hair. By way of a small needle, each follicle on the face is administered an electrical impulse. This damages its structure, keeping it from producing hair. Since each hair and follicle is treated individually, this method can be time consuming.
Step 2
Get laser hair removal. With this type of procedure, a larger section of skin containing unwanted hair receives pulses of intense light that permeates the skin and damages the follicle. This forces the follicle to go into a resting phase, so hair growth ceases for an extended period of time. Depending on the amount of hair on your face, it may take anywhere from 6 to 8 sessions to stop growth. You can expect up to a year without the growth of facial hair. After that time, you'll need further treatments.
Step 3
Use eflornithine. More commonly known as Vaniqa, eflornithine is a prescription medication that greatly slows the growth of facial hair. The topical cream is applied anywhere on the face experiencing unwanted hair growth. As the solution soaks into the skin, it prevents your bodily enzymes from prompting the growth of hair.
Tips and Warnings
- Eflornithine is more effective on women than men, so the options of long-term facial hair removal are even more limited for males. Eflornithine has been known to cause skin irritation in some people, acne and even the sensation of stinging. Stinging usually occurs upon application. Although eflornithine can stop facial hair growth, you'll need to remove any unwanted hair prior to application. Before applying any makeup, moisturizers or sunscreens, allow the solution to dry fully. Not doing so may reduce its efficacy.
- There are also herbal variations of eflornithine. These are not proven to work, so stick with the prescription formula if using this method of long-term facial hair removal.
