Hair offers the scalp protection from the elements and insulation from the cold. Once hair starts to fall out, there is no physical pain attached, but the mental anguish can be severe. Hair replacement systems can treat hair loss and give you back your self confidence. Personal preference determines the best hair replacement system for each individual.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil, or Rogaine, is a topical treatment that comes in either a foam or liquid. You apply it to your head in thinning areas or where there is no hair at all. It stimulates circulation to promote hair growth and prevent further hair loss. This product comes in versions for men and women, and it can be purchased at your local pharmacy. You must take this product for at least three months to see results.
Finasteride
Oral treatments are also available for hair replacement. Propecia is the brand name for finasteride, an FDA approved medication that was originally used to treat an enlarged prostate. It helps slow down hair loss and promote growth on the crown of the head, but it has no effect on the temples. Finasteride is a prescription drug that should only be used by men.
Hair Weave
Hair weaves are pieces of human hair, synthetic hair or a combination of the two. They are applied to the bald area on top of the head, then woven into the existing hair on the sides and back. Hair weaves give the appearance of a full head of hair, and you can style and wash your weaves with your regular hair. Weaves usually last two months.
Hair Transplant
Donor hairs are uprooted from the sides and back and replanted into bald areas of the scalp during hair transplantation. It takes approximately three to six months for the replanted hair to start growing.
Toupees
Toupees do not replace hair, but rather cover a bald or balding scalp. Like all wigs, toupees should be taken off at night.
