Clotrimazole is an anti-fungal medication used to treat yeast infections of the vagina, skin and mouth, says MedlinePlus. Clotrimazole is available as a cream, solution, lotion or lozenge that should be taken as your doctor prescribes. Failure to do so can lead to serious, and potentially fatal, consequences.
Common Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, clotrimazole can commonly cause nausea, vomiting, itching or an abnormal feeling in your mouth. These side effects aren't problematic unless they continue for at least three days. Get your doctor's input and inform her when you experience these side effects. She may discontinue clotrimazole and find a safer medication for your yeast infections.
Serious Side Effects
MedlinePlus indicates that clotrimazole can cause such hazardous side effects as burning, redness, irritation and swelling at the application site. It can also cause fever, stomach pain, malodorous vaginal discharge and vomiting (especially with the lozenges). Contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.
Additional Concerns
You should avoid clotrimazole use if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. It can cause facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing or edema (swelling) of your tongue, throat or lips. Get help immediately to safely reverse these potentially fatal side effects. Do not use clotrimazole for any eye infections. This can lead to eye irritation, redness, swelling, visual disturbances and even blindness.
It is unknown whether clotrimazole can pass into your breast milk or harm your baby during pregnancy, says the National Library of Medicine. However, inform your doctor whether you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant or intend to breastfeed. Your doctor will assess the risks and benefits of using clotrimazole.
Drugs.com says that you should tell your doctor if you suffer from any liver problems such as hepatitis, cirrhosis (liver disease) or liver failure. Your doctor may have to lower your clotrimazole dose, because it can lead to the aforementioned serious side effects.
