As you age, your skin loses some of its elasticity and is more prone to damage and wrinkles due to a slow cell turnover. When you are in your late twenties, you are in an awkward spot when it comes to your skin. You are too old to use skin care products that are meant for teens, but you are too young for the rich, emollient moisturizers found at the department store. Make sure that you care for your skin in your late twenties with the right products and techniques to keep it looking smooth and youthful in your thirties.
Step 1
Begin a skin care regimen. While you may have previously been able to come home late from a night out and fall into bed with makeup still on without moisturizing, as you enter your late twenties you will notice that those nights of no skin care take a toll on the tone and texture of your skin. Always go to bed after washing and moisturizing your skin so that it doesn't dry out overnight.
Step 2
Try a moisturizer with retinol and Vitamin E. You most likely don't need one any more potent, unless you are noticing severe premature aging. Making sure to moisturize both before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning can help your skin stay hydrated and stop wrinkles from forming early.
Step 3
Protect your skin from the sun. The sun can cause as much as 90 percent of your skin's deterioration through the harmful UVA and UVB rays that it emits, and in your late twenties, your skin is less likely to recover from a sunburn or day at the beach than it did in your early twenties, says dermatologist Aivee Aguilar-Teo. Don't chance it and be sure to use an SPF 15 moisturizer every day. If going out all day in the sun, use a higher SPF and be sure to cover up with a hat.
Step 4
Exfoliate at home, but don't go in for microdermabrasion. Ranella Hirsch, M.D., of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery noted in a 2007 issue of "O," the Oprah Magazine that women under 30 don't need to have heavy procedures like microdermabrasion or chemical peels done. Simply exfoliating with a scrub made of sugar and water once per week is enough to keep the skin looking fresh.
Step 5
Treat acne with a gentle salicylic acid formula of no more than 2 percent. Even if you have acne, your skin is probably drying out in your late twenties, so using something with a higher acne medicine content can cause your skin to become dry and peel, only adding to your acne problem. In your late twenties, acne should be mild enough that it is a once in a while problem. If it is more than that, see your dermatologist for other solutions that won't irritate your skin.
