Relaxed hair needs to be maintained with a simple regimen and complemented by intervals of professional hair care. Relaxer applications are best applied by a licensed cosmetologist every eight to 10 weeks. Regular trimming also contributes to hair health and it is best to have this procedure performed by a professional. Although relaxed hair is more fragile and prone to breakage, regular maintenance with high-quality products can result in a beautiful head of tresses.

Step 1

Wash your hair with a mild, pH balanced shampoo once very seven to 10 days for the best results. A pH balanced shampoo will defend against stripping natural oils and moisture. Your shampoo should never contain lauryl (or laureth) sulfate for use on relaxed hair. This agent is designed to strip the hair of all natural oils, which is not appropriate for the needs of relaxed hair.

Step 2

Condition hair bi-weekly with a high-quality moisturizing conditioner. You can judge the quality of a conditioner by rubbing a dime sized amount between the palms. If it disappears onto the skin, it is likely a conditioner of good quality. Propylene glycol, and mineral oil or petroleum are ingredients commonly used in lesser quality conditioners. These should not be used on relaxed hair according to the "Hair and Skin Care for African American & Biracial Children Workbook."

Step 3

Protect the hair from environmental damage by applying an oil-based hair dress to the ends. Avoid any products containing mineral oil or petroleum. The moisturizing oil is used to replenish the oils lost during any chemical process and protect the hair shaft from current sources of damage, such as the environment and styling aids. Research has shown herbs, such as rosemary, lavender and sage, promote healthy hair maintenance and growth. Moisturizing oils using these herbs are beneficial to the health of relaxed hair.

Step 4

See your beautician every 10 to 12 weeks for relaxer touch-ups to new growth. The application of chemicals to your relaxed hair should always be done by a professional. Your stylist should also apply a deep penetrating conditioner or hot oil treatment to complement your weekly regimen.
