Herbs for Thinning Hair

Herbs scientifically proven to increase blood flow to the scalp are considered safe for the treatment of thinning hair according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The center's reports show that the cause of thinning hair is often a lack of blood flow to the scalp or hormonal imbalances. The topical use of lavender, saw palmetto and Gingko biloba have been proven effective in the treatment of thinning hair as documented in "The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" and the University of Maryland's articles on the use of each of the respective herbs.

Lavender

Commonly used in soaps, shampoos and other body products, lavender's pleasant fragrance is known to produce calming effects. Biologically identified as lavandula angustifolia, the herb was used to treat hair loss in patients suffering from alopecia, a hair loss disorder. Patients massaged lavender into the scalp consistently for seven months and enjoyed significant hair growth results when compared to the control group that did not use lavender.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto contains a natural ingredient that is similar to that found in the hair regrowth drugs Propecia and Proscar. Similarly, saw palmetto lowers the presence of DHT in the bosy. DHT is an acronym for dihydrotestosterone, which is a hormone that can protect against hair thinning as a result of hormonal imbalances. "The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" published the results of a study on saw palmetto's hair growth effects whereby the men taking the herb orally experienced a 60 percent improvement in overall hair growth.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba has been proven effective to increase circulation as confirmed by the University of Maryland's Medical Center. Hair thinning is often caused by a lack of blood flow to the scalp area. Thus, gingko's circulatory effects are believed to be an effective treatment in patients experiencing hair loss. Taking Gingko biloba orally can increase overall circulation in the body as well.
