How to Reduce Wrinkles Around the Eyes

Reducing the look of wrinkles around the eyes requires adopting a proper skin care and anti-aging program. Wrinkles are a natural byproduct of the fine lines that occur when you smile, squint, or basically make any facial expression. As the collagen supply in the skin dwindles with time, those fine lines will deepen and become wrinkles. Using products that will replenish the collagen, avoiding behaviors that will scrunch the skin, and eating foods that are skin-friendly will help to reduce those unwanted lines around the eyes.

Step 1

Nourish your skin from the inside. Eat eight to 10 servings per day of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water, as recommended by June Breiner, MD, an internist in Maryland. The vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in fruits and vegetables help to reduce wrinkles. Dr. Breiner also suggests consuming fresh caught salmon three times a week because of the high Omega-3 fatty acids. You can also try tuna, trout, mackerel or herring.

Step 2

Use an eye cream with retinol or peptides to reduce wrinkles. Retinol comes from Vitamin A and is beneficial collagen production, according to a Good Housekeeping article called "The No-Knife Eye Lift." Try an eye cream with peptides instead of retinol if you have sensitive skin or if you have experienced any irritation with products that include retinol, as advised by New York City dermatologist Dr. Jody A. Levine, M.D. Dr. Levine says that peptide proteins may not be as effective as retinol against wrinkles, but they are gentler.

Step 3

Ask your doctor for a prescription eye cream if a retinol-based cream isn't showing results. Request an eye cream that contains Retin-A or Renova, suggests Scott Gerrish, MD. Dr. Gerrish is a non-surgical skin care specialist. Retin-A or Renova are effective anti-wrinkle ingredients that help thicken and smooth skin. Use Renova if you have dry skin, says Dr. Gerrish.

Step 4

Protect yourself from the sun. The UV radiation from the sun will increase wrinkles, according to an article called "13 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles." Squinting to see on a sunny day will deepen the wrinkles. Wear sunglasses, hats, visors and light clothing to ward off the sun's harmful ways. Use an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen with zinc to protect the skin from further damage when sunglasses or a hat is not an option.

Tips and Warnings

  • Antioxidants are beneficial in your foods, but also in your eye cream. Try an antioxidant-enriched eye cream with ingredients like Vitamin C and green tea.
