5 Things You Need to Know About Cycling

1. Understanding Cycling

Cycling is popular activity done by millions of people around the world on a daily basis. Some people do it for relaxation, some do it as a form of transportation and others do it professionally. Cycling has been around for many years, called the first real form of human mobility. It all started back in 1817 when Baron von Drais invented the first device to help him get around the gardens. It was a machine you straddled and the rider was able to steer the front wheel while the rear wheel was mounted securely. However, this machine did not have peddles; instead you went forward by pushing with your feet. This machine was the very first bicycle.

2. Types of Cycling

City cycling is very common in large cities where there is a lot of traffic. However, it is not easy to cycle in the city. The cyclist must follow all of the traffic laws and yield to pedestrians everywhere. Commercial or professional cycling is also very common. Some police use cycling to patrol busy and crowded parks and events. Some people use bikes to transport products for sale and in many countries, mail carriers use bicycles to deliver the mail on a daily basis. Recreational cycling is a good way to exercise and have fun. Many people cycle in the parks or in races as a form of exercise and recreation. Recreational cycling is common at the beach and in large parks.

3. Cycling Equipment

When cycling, a cyclist should always have the right equipment. The equipment would include a helmet, cycling clothes (such as spandex shorts and shirt), cycling shoes, sunglasses and a bike adjusted for the rider's size and weight. There is also a lot of extra equipment for the cyclist such as water bottles, stopwatches, windbreakers and more.

4. Benefits of Cycling

The biggest and most important benefit is that it is a good way to exercise and keep the body and mind healthy. It is also a great way to relax and relieve stress and many people use it as a way to spend time with their friends and family. Another benefit is that it is a cost effective form of transportation and does not pollute the environment like automobiles do with their fumes.

5. Cycling Associations

In the United States today, there are several bike clubs and associations that people can join to meet other cyclists and to push for laws regarding cycling. Check with your local chamber of commerce for cycling associations in your community.
