No matter what the emergency, it never hurts to be prepared. Whether you need a first aid kit for when you're on the go or additional kits for your home, a mini first aid kit ensures that you can treat injuries efficiently. A mini first aid kit is designed to be basic and should not take the place of a larger, more comprehensive kit or professional medical care.
Step 1
Brainstorm all of the potential needs for a mini first aid kit. Think about everyone in your family and whether they have regular access to medical supplies. Ideally, everyone in the family should have regular access or each person should have a mini first aid kit.
Step 2
Find a small, durable container for your mini first aid kit. A square plastic container, similar to a lunch container, may be a good option. You can also consider something that is easy to transport, such as a travel makeup case. Get multiple containers if you are making more than one kit.
Step 3
Purchase basic items for your kit: adhesive bandages, antiseptic or alcohol wipes and non-latex gloves. Purchase enough to stock each kit you're making.
Step 4
Add a basic pain reliever such as aspirin. These are often inexpensive; a store brand can be just as effective as a name brand. Take size into consideration and purchase travel-size packets.
Step 5
Store the kit in a common area in your home that is easily accessible to anyone who might need it. Distribute the "on-the-go" kits to your family and instruct them to store them in places they can get to easily (i.e. in the car, in each child's backpack, in the garage or in your home office.
Step 6
Educate your family on the contents of the kit and their importance.
Step 7
Develop a schedule to check in with each family member to replenish depleted supplies and replace expired ones.
