How to Straighten Hair Without a Straightening Iron

If you have curly or wavy hair, straightening it is a way to temporarily achieve different looks without making a commitment to a more permanent hairstyle change. This process usually involves a straightening iron, however, it's possible to achieve sleek, straight hair without one. What really counts when altering your hair's texture is heat, and you can get that heat from a blow dryer. This technique takes only slightly longer than using a flat iron and achieves similar results. If you have extra curly hair, you may not be able to get it as smooth as you would with the iron.

Step 1

Wash and condition your hair. Use a towel to gently squeeze excess water out of your hair. Do not rub your hair with the towel as this leads to frizzy hair.

Step 2

Apply styling products. Apply a leave-in conditioner if you have dry hair. Next, apply a straightening cream or a product designed to prevent heat damage to your hair.

Step 3

Finger comb or use a wide toothed comb to help evenly distribute the product from root to tip.

Step 4

Use your blow dryer on a medium to low setting to dry your hair. Point the dryer downward to keep hair movement to a minimum and reduce frizzing.

Step 5

Divide your hair into a few small sections and clip the hair in each section to the top of your head.

Step 6

Start with the back section. Grab 1-inch sections of hair and roll the round brush underneath them to pull the hair taut. With your free hand, blow dry the segment while you simultaneously pull the hair tightly with the round brush. Work from the roots to the tips, slowly guiding the brush so hair always stays taut. Repeat if necessary.

Step 7

Continue to work in 1-inch segments until you have completed an entire section. Repeat until each section is complete.

Step 8

Apply a finishing cream or a small amount of hair oil to your hands and rub your palms together. Glide your hands over your hair to add shine and help lock in your straight style. This will also help prevent flyaways and frizzies.

Step 9

Style you hair without handling it too much. Spritz with hairspray to hold your style.
